Important Stuff

Below you will find links a bunch of things I think are really important. These are organized into six sections, although they essentially all boil down to information that can help us all learn to live in a way that respects ourselves, other people, other living things, the planet, and whatever else is out there that we don't understand. Diversity, Peace, Health, Environment, Parenting, and Vegetarianism.

Diversity

I strongly believe that in order for people to fully get the most out of life, we need to strive for a society in which people can learn from each others' differences, and at least allow each other to "live and let live". This doesn't mean that everyone is the same or agrees on everything but it means striving to be non-judgemental and understanding and encouraging an end to all forms of discrimination by embracing and learning from diversity from people of any gender, gender identity, sexual identity, sexual preference, age, race, religion, education, lifestyle, appearance, ability, financial resources, political beliefs, and dietary preference.

Peace

When I was growing up, I was proud that Canada had never been involved in a war in my lifetime. I really thought world peace was on it's way in! Recent world events have proven that sadly, war is still considered a viable means for a nation to get its way. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for national security, and I have tremendous respect for those who give their lives to defend freedom. However, I have think it's high time that as a species we stop killing each other and making excuses for it!

I hope we get some conflict resolution training for our leaders! And more fundamentally, I hope we start celebrating diversity of culture and difference of opinion, and cease to consider violence as a viable way of getting our way. To do this we have to end all "us vs. them" mentality and realize we're all on this third rock from the sun together - no matter how different we seem from each other!

Health

After having a typical Canadian teen male diet through the 80s - consisting of more ground beef and cookies than vegetables, grains, fruit, and other "healthy" stuff I became interested in health issues because of someone very important to me who had a possibly diet-related disease.

With the typical open-minded skeptical scientific approach that I have to everything I started looking into health and diet - including "alternative" health and put my test subject through all kinds of herbs, dietary changes etc. - but in the end we found that while there is no shortage of bogus information from people who want to sell you things, there is also a wealth of practical, useful information about health that just isn't mainstream yet! We discovered that we soon knew more about nutrition than our doctors, nurses, and in fact even the nutritionists who pay you a visit in the hospital when you have babies!

Below are links to some of my favourite health subjects and things which I think possibly aren't out there mainstream but everyone really should know about.

Environment

This section is really about waking up to the fact that we need to do things in ways that are sustainable. This doesn't mean that we have to be all about "the sky is falling" and "impending doom" but it does mean being realistic and having the courage to recognize that sometimes we need to do things in slightly different (and sometimes more expensive) ways because in the long run it just makes more sense. Below are some success stories and more information on some of the most crucial environmental issues facing us today.

Parenting

"Trying to save the world while neglecting you own family would be like straightening chairs on the Titanic" - from 7 Habits of Highly Effective Families Calendar by Stephen R. Covey

Parenting philosophies have gone through radical changes in the last couple of generations (our parents and their parents). How do we cope with all the mixed messages? Invest some of your time in parent education classes. No matter what type of parent you are, there will always be something pricelessly valuable to be gained by learning things that aren't obvious about the most important responsibility we will ever have.

Life Seminars is unique parenting program designed to provide a comprehensive approach to living in families with children of all ages and temperaments.

I have taken and then gotten involved as a group leader in Life Seminars courses which are available in Victoria BC as well as now online. These courses have been literally life changing for me, and it's not that there was something fundamentally wrong or that I didn't know about parenting. It's just that when you take the time to really learn about how to understand your child, their temperment, how to listen to them, how to talk to them, how to resolve conflict, how to understand feelings and emotions, how to teach responsibility, repect for boundaries of others and self, understanding self esteem, and how to discipline with love ... well it can make a huge difference! These courses have given me skills and insight that is responsible for many tear jerking wonderful stories not only with respect to my parenting, but also relationships with everyone else in my life - from my spouse, parents, siblings, inlaws, work, friends, peers, business associates - you name it! I think this course should be required for everyone on the planet! Especially world leaders!

Vegetarianism

I strongly believe in vegetarianism because I think that our society is caught up in a system for food and agriculture that came from beliefs that treated animals and soul-less, thoughtless things, no different from any other material to be used. We now know that is not the case, and our society just hasn't caught up. Of course there are health and environmental benefits as well, which are also becomming more and more known.
